The book proposes that early civilizations possessed sophisticated astronomical understanding, which they transmitted through symbolic narratives, often involving celestial mills or rotating mechanisms. The title refers to the Old Icelandic kenning \"Amlóða kvern,\" which the authors interpret as a symbolic representation of the heavens rotating around the celestial pole.
